BRAINIAC uses word and clue sets to create
puzzles that help you learn a given topic.
Find the word that fits the space using
the clue given. The clues appear at the
bottom of the screen as you highlight
different spaces on the puzzle.

The word that is highlighted is the one
ready to accept input, and the box that
has the colored highlight is the box
where your next input letter will go.
Clicking the mouse while the pointer is
on the puzzle grid or pressing the
cursor arrow keys causes a new word space
to be highlighted.
The clue for the highlighted word space
is displayed on the line at the bottom of
the screen. To find the clue for any word
space on the puzzle grid, just highlight
the word space, and the clue will appear.

You can play this game with either the
keyboard or the mouse or a combination
of the two.
Keyboard:
The first letter or number of all
options is underlined. To select the
option from the keyboard, hold down the
ALT key while pressing that letter or
number.
Note: Any letter you type without
holding down the ALT key is considered
input and will be inserted in the
highlighted box on the puzzle grid.
Use the cursor arrow keys to move the
cursor pointer around the puzzle
grid or to select or scroll text in
pop-up windows.
The ESC key returns you to the currently
active mode from any window or action.
Mouse:
Select the option you want from the
screen by moving the mouse pointer
until it touches the option. Then
click (press and release) the left
mouse button.
Text in pop-up windows, like these
directions, may be scrolled up or down by
clicking on the arrows that exist on the
right edge of the window.
To close a window, move the pointer
outside of the window area and click.

Whenever you start Brainiac or select the
Game/New option, the "New Game Settings"
window appears. This window lets you set
the variables for and start the next game.
Options are:
Difficulty:
Select the level of difficulty desired.
Easy - Easy puzzles with maximum help.
Usual - Average puzzles with limited help.
Difficult - Large, difficult puzzles with
no help.
Topic:
The current topic displays below this option.
Selecting this option displays a list of
topics to pick from.
Players:
The name(s) of the current player(s) display
below this option: Selecting this option lets
you pick a one-player or two-player game.
Selecting the player name lets you select a
new name from the list of existing names
or add a new name.
Start already:
Selecting this option starts the new game
using the settings from above.

Across the top of the screen are three
MENU options that let you select the
game you want, get various types of
assistance, and customize the game.
Game:
Displays a pop-up window with the
following options:
Load - Load a puzzle that was
previously saved in progress.
Save - Save the current state of the
existing puzzle by name.
New - Generate a new puzzle using one
of the topics that are available
for this program. (See "New Game
Settings Window")
Clear - Restart the current puzzle by
clearing all entries on the grid.
Information - Display general information
about this game.
Exit - End game and return to DOS.
Help:
Displays a pop-up window with the
following options:
Directions - Displays this set of
instructions.
Hint - Display an additional clue
for the highlighted word.
Letter - Get the correct letter answer
for the highlighted position.
Word - Get the correct word answer for
the highlighted position.
All Words - Display all correct
answers for the full puzzle.
READ THIS - Displays more information
about the game and how you can
become a registered brainiac.
Options:
Lets you customize the game to your
personal preferences. The game
remembers the features you pick and
restarts the game with those features
until you change them again. The
options are:
Time - Choose whether or not to
time each game.
Music - Choose whether or not
to enable the background MIDI
score.
Sounds - Choose whether or not to
enable sound effects.

On the left side of the screen is a blue
rectangle with several buttons:
A B C . . . Y Z blank - Click on these
letters to enter them in the puzzle.
Clicking on the blank box erases an
existing highlighted letter.
Skip - Causes the colored highlight on
the puzzle grid to move to the next
box in the word.
Erase - Erases the contents of the
currently highlighted word.
Undo - Lets you "take back" the last
text entry or change. You can use this
to undo all entries made during the
current turn. You can also activate
this option by pressing the BACKSPACE
(or RUBOUT) key.
